Tower Ticker: U.S. Olympic Committee fighting newspaper effort to trademark 120-year-old name

  • Even as it was employing its special brand of diplomacy to advance Chicago's efforts to land the 2016 Games, the USOC was waging a trademark fight with McClatchy Co. over the name of newspaper, The Olympian, according to the publication based in, um, Olympia, Wash

    • But what would anyone expect of an outfit that picked a fight with the International Olympic Committee by trying to establish its own TV channel over IOC protests while the IOC was weighing what country should get the 2016 Summer Olympics?

       

      Congress passed a federal law in 1978 that gave the USOC exclusive control of numerous trademarks in this country, and amended the law in 1998 to expand the covered terms, according to the paper.
